TWENTY-FIVE CANDLES FOR UMBRIA JAZZ WINTER

Umbria Jazz is celebrating its twenty-fifth year with a special edition featuring artists who are new to the festival and artists who are making a welcome return appearance in Umbria.
For this special occasion the festival is keeping to the tried and tested formula that has brought it so much success; five days of music from late morning to the wee small hours in the historic centre of old Orvieto. The concerts take place at venues which are an integral part of Orvieto’s history and culture, from the Teatro Mancinelli to the Cathedral, from the Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo to the Palazzo dei Sette, and from the Museo Emilio Greco to the former convent of San Francesco. And the town centre itself becomes the stage for the lively, captivating performances of the marching band. In all, Umbria Jazz Winter #25 will involve a total of 100 events with 25 bands and about 150 musicians.
The festival is not just about music, as Orvieto is renowned for its fine food and wine, and Umbria Jazz has entered into a happy coexistence with the fine local produce, which can be sampled at jazz lunches and dinners held at two venues in the centre, and all day at the Palazzo dei Sette. Here at lunchtime and dinner time there will also be “Spaghetti Swing: A Cooking Concert” (featuring not only pasta but also wines and cheeses). Once again, for the twenty-fifth time, Umbria Jazz Winter combines culture and tourism and offers something for everyone. Music for experts coexists happily alongside music for those who are less-experts, and it is all united by the common denominator of quality.
Two events have become festival traditions and are now a part of the identity of Umbria Jazz Winter: the dinners on New Year’s Eve, where you can welcome the New Year with music that goes on into the early hours of 2018, and the gospel concert in the Cathedral on New Year’s Day that follows the afternoon Mass for Peace.
And the festival would not be the same without the captivating music of the marching band that performs in the streets of the old town centre each day and is synonymous with fun.
The aim of Umbria Jazz Winter #25 is to further consolidate its position as one of the main players on the Italian jazz scene. After a quarter of a century, the winter festival in Orvieto has become an essential part of the history of Umbria Jazz.
