Peter Bernstein earned a front-row seat on the New York jazz guitar scene at the end of the ‘80s. Since then, he has carried out an intense live and studio activity, releasing about ten albums to his name and working as a sideman with musicians such as Sonny Rollins, Bobby Hutcherson, George Coleman, Lou Donaldson, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Joshua Redman, Brad Mehldau, Diana Krall, Lee Konitz. His gentle and modern style, which is ideal for an elegant and musically “cultured” mainstream, has made him a very popular and respected performer.

The quartet he plays with in Perugia presents the uncommon guitar-piano formula. Bernstein must love it very much since he debuted in the early ‘90s with a similar quartet, and the pianist was Brad Mehldau.

Once again the pianist, Sullivan Fortner, is one the most successful 30-year-olds. The public of Umbria Jazz knows it very well since he has performed there more than once, solo or with Cécile McLorin Salvant and Roy Hargrove.

Together and in the quartet, Bernstein and Fortner have recorded an album, What Comes Next, clearly inspired by the thoughts after the lockdown.The quartet performing in Perugia is formed by Doug Weiss on double bass and an Italian jazz star on drums, Roberto Gatto.
