Farewell, Burt Bacharach

Share

Burt Bacharach passed away yesterday: the winner of three Academy Awards and six Grammy Awards, the author of hundreds of hits for cinema and Broadway. He is universally considered one of the greatest songwriters of the 20th century and one of the few who combined commercial success and quality.

Among his many works, he wrote unforgettable melodies such as “Alfie”, “Magic Moments”, “Walk On By”, “I’ll Never Fall In Love Again”, “I Say A Little Prayer”, thanks to the stunning performances by Dionne Warwick, with whom he started a long-standing musical collaboration. Success continued over the years with great pop songs related, among others, to Paul Anka, Christopher Cross, Roberta Flack, Patti LaBelle, Neil Diamond. Different elements merge into his music marvelously: he was great fun of jazz music as a young man; he studied classical music in depth; he made pop music a form of art, apparently simple but sophisticated and penetrating. His concerts at Umbria Jazz in 2004 and 2009 were unforgettable.
