He is one of the pillars of Italian jazz music, an original artist for his great melodic sensitivity and deeply rooted in the jazz tradition. Pieranunzi is an eclectic musician (from blues to baroque): pianism, composition and arrangement are linked as a jazz performer and author of film and theater scores. His music world has no borders, making him one of the most versatile musicians on the European scene. Jazz and classical tradition have always coexisted in his career. His rich discography (more than eighty albums) includes prestigious collaborations with jazz legends such as Chet Baker, Paul Motian, Charlie Haden, Marc Johnson, Lee Konitz, Joey Baron, a CD in duo with Bruno Canino (“Americas”) and works on Scarlatti, Bach, Handel, Martinu, Gershwin (in trio with his brother Gabriele on violin and Mirabassi on clarinet).
The Roman pianist is the only Italian to have played and recorded many times under his own name in New York’s Village Vanguard. Among his several national and international accolades, he won the French Django D’Or Prize in 1997 as Best European Musician, the German Echo Jazz Award in 2014 as Best International Keyboard Artist, and the “Una vita per il Jazz” Award received by Musica Jazz in the same year.
Many of his compositions have become standards, played and recorded by musicians worldwide, and published in the most prestigious Real Books. His musical language has been the subject of numerous degrees and PhD theses in Italy and abroad.
