Les Amazones d’Afrique

Les Amazones d’Afrique is a female group formed in Mali in 2015 to give voice to African women, their problems, ambitions, and their desire to fight, with the strength of being united for their rights.

They performed their first concert in Marseilles in October of the same year. Then, they were invited to perform at WOMAD and signed to Real World Records for the release of their first album, “République Amazone.”

Since then, they have had intense recording and live activity. The original lineup included Angélique Kidjo. To call it a supergroup of African popular music or world music would be reductive since it’s impossible to leave aside the cultural, social and historical messages that are an integral part of it: the name refers to a military group from the 17th century to the 19th century called Les Amazones du Dahomey.
