Mirco Rubegni 5et “My Louis”

My Louis means Louis Armstrong, as seen by Mirco Rubegni. It’s definitely not the Armstrong who played in the 20s with the Hot Five or the Hot Seven, but how he would play today, one century later. The trumpeter from Montepulciano has set up a very modern band for this project, with extensive use of electronics and explicit references to early jazz, such as the bass tuba (Glauco Benedetti) and the guitar (Gabrio Baldacci), which usually took the place of the piano back then.

Federico Scettri (drums) and Simone Padovani (percussions) complete the quintet with a solid rhythm section.

The project is not a tribute to a jazz legend in the traditional sense or a simple modern reinterpretation, but it takes Satchmo as inspiration to (re)create a modern and personal groove with solid funky insertions that are in the style of the trumpeter (Rubegni, Scettri and Padovani are part of Gianluca Petrella’s Cosmic Renaissance, and Rubegni was a member of Funk Off). My Louis is a project that skips over the myth and is much more appropriate than many conventional celebrations.
